The Will of the Father: A Guide to the Sermon on the Mount (Lesson 6—Exceeding the Righteousness of the Pharisees (Part 2))

In the second half of Matthew 5, Jesus continues revealing how the righteousness of the kingdom surpasses the surface-level religion of the scribes and Pharisees. He isn’t just correcting misunderstanding—He’s calling us into a radically different way of life, shaped by truth, humility, and love.

In this lesson, we examine three powerful areas where disciples are called to live differently:

Each of these teachings pierces the heart of human pride. In a world where people protect their rights, manipulate words, and divide into tribes, Jesus calls His followers to stand out—not by force, but by grace.

  • Our words (5:33–37): not dressed in oaths or exaggeration, but grounded in simple, trustworthy truth.
  • Our reactions (5:38–42): not demanding fairness or revenge, but willing to be generous, patient, and selfless.
  • Our love (5:43–48): not limited to friends or family, but extended even to enemies.

As we study these words, we must ask not only what they mean, but what they reveal about us. Do we reflect the Father’s character in our promises, our patience, and our love? If not, Jesus offers both the correction and the courage to live more fully in His likeness.
